Casio Handheld Stopwatch Timer Model HS-3V-1R

A stopwatch is a handheld timepiece designed to measure the amount of time elapsed from a particular time when activated to when the piece is deactivated. A large digital version of a stopwatch designed for viewing at a distance, as in a sports stadium, is called a stopclock.

The operation of this stopwatch is simple and uncluttered. It is easy to hold and the buttons have good tactile response (even when wearing gloves). It seems durable. It’s silent (i.e., doesn’t beep or chime). And I find the 1st-2nd place timing feature especially useful, as it is like having two concurrent stopwatches in your hand. In short, this is a very good stopwatch for the money. The only thing stopping me from giving this product 5 stars is that stopwatches are often used out of doors and by people who perspire; Casio really should have made the HS-3V water-resistant! Otherwise, this is a fine product and I recommend it over other stopwatches of similar cost.

Problematic Usefulness, February 5, 2012

After using (or trying to use) this timer over the past six month, here’s what I have experienced:

1. Digital display easy to read when stopped.
2. Digital display too small to see at a glance if the watch is actually timing (you have to take your eyes off what you are timing to see if you are really timing it).
3. Buttons respond best to a “gorilla-grip” push.
4. Even with a gorilla grip, it’s problematic timing will commence, stop or reset with a single push of either button (there are two).
5. If you hang the watch around your neck, it hangs down at a 45-degree angle (rather than straight down) adding to read-out difficulties (neck rope is off centered on the watch).

Bottom line: use the stopwatch timing functions included in many wrist watches (which often cost less than this turkey).
