Fun Device – Does What I Want and Need, January 28, 2014
This review is from: Fitbit Flex Wireless Activity + Sleep Tracker Lime
I got this as a Christmas gift and I was so excited to try it out. In the past, I have used the Weight Watchers Active Link which is very limited in its ability due to the fact that it only tells me how many Activity Points I earn– this is WW language only.

So I opened the Flex, charged the small device as I read the instructions, fitted the correct wrist band and went on my way. I wear the Flex 24/7 with a once a week exception. About every 7-days, I remove it at night to get a full charge. Every other night though, I wear it.

I considered trading it in for the Force so I could get the wrist wear-ability and the stair/flight counter but the Force has its charge port in direct contact with the skin and is not rated as high for water resistance due to its design. My husband and I do a lot of “fun runs” and muddy 5k things such as the Dirty Dash and Warrior Dash and are training for the Tough Mudder this year and really wanted to make sure we bought a device that could withstand the elements.

That being said, I have caught my wrist band once in the last two weeks trying to free itself from my wrist. I had on long sleeve Under Armor and I was pushing my sleeves up to wash my hands. The two materials caught up and the wrist band lost the fight. Thankfully this was because I was messing with it. But since I have read numerous reviews about people’s bands detaching without notice, I will be reinforcing my wristband during the fun runs come spring and summer. I figure it will be easy to place a sweatband over the Fitbit, or loop something through the holes on the band other than the clasp that comes in the package.

I have gone to the track to test out the distance accuracy. My Fitbit tells me I have walked a mile before I have actually walked a mile. Usually, I get about 5/6 of the way through the mile. I don’t know if that is simply my device, an inaccurate measurement of my stride or that my stride is simply not consistent throughout the day. Just be mindful that this is more or an estimate than a truth until you test it out for yourself.

Over all, I am very happy with this product. I don’t have an iPhone or newer Samsung but if you do, look for the opportunity to wirelessly sync your Fitbit while on the go. Currently though, I find that waiting until I am near my dongle (at home or on my Surface while away) is just fine by me! I highly recommend this product to people who want to get more data than your average pedometer or smart phone app. If you like the wrist wear-ability, this is the one for you–nice on the budget at only (ish) and dependable.

    Purchased from: Best Buy DEC13/JAN14
Comes with charging unit, small band, large band, wireless dongle and instructions. Also, your basic membership on fitbit.com is free and reports really great features you don’t have to sign up for more than once. Plus optional paid options on their site for training tips and other such tools.

Pros: The flex is light, comfortable and really not very noticeable for me (I wear on my non-dominant hand). This product is VERY water resistant so far (shower, pool, sweat, rain, etc). Love the color out of the box. Onetime payment for the device without monthly charges is wonderful. Battery life lasts at least a week (probably more but I charge once a week). Sync happens automatically within 20 feet of the dongle.

Cons: The lime color is already discolored from my clothing and I have only been wearing it for two weeks. This product does not count flights of stairs like the One or the Force does. No option to clip this device on other than in the wrist band. May need reinforcement to stay on during obstacle races and other similar training exercises.

I started off with buying the Fitbit Force. It bothered my skin then kept falling off my wrist. I would sync the data and it did not seem accurate. I lost it on a hike and could not locate it. I bought the Flex to replace it and it is cheaper in cost and a far more superior product. The wrist band locks into place nicely. It is comfortable and I bought lime green so I could see it more easily. Syncing and watching my progress has become addicting. Tracking my sleep patterns is also addicting. I highly recommend the FLEX. It is very easy to use, comfortable, and helps me with my weight loss goal.
